Magento becomes a passion

This post can be also called “Good news for Magento and bad news for other shopping cart applications”. Let’s find out the details.

What are the most popular open source shopping carts available? As for me these are Magento, osCommerce, Zen Cart and CRE Loaded. Of course there are more of them but I prefer studying only widespread ones.

What I have in mind is to see if Magento is really that popular as we hear about it. With this in mind I’ve used Google Trends. As you probably know Google Trends enables users to learn how popular a particular search term has been on Google over time and see the relevant news articles that ran on that subject. So I’ve entered words Magento, osCommerce, Zen Cart and CRE Loaded into the search box and here are the results

I trust Google and that’s the reason why I congratulate Magento. Obviously it’s the most often searched shopping cart solution on Google. Time will show if it’ll be as popular in the future as it is now but these days Magento is on the top!

As you can see this post doesn’t review certain peculiarities of Magento or other shopping carts. It simply shows the latest search trends and thus the growing interest to Magento.

Would you like to upgrade to Magento Version 1.2.1.2

On March 3, 2009 a new version of Magento solution has been announced.
I’m speaking of Magento Version 1.2.1.2.

So you can download Magento Version 1.2.1.2 and upgrade your Magento powered online store.

After reading release notes you’ll learn what bugs have been fixed in this release:

  • admin login form and password forgotten form have been fixed
  • “Return Url” in Magento Connect Manager has been modified as well.

By visiting Magento blog I’ve found the next important info for people who use the Magento Connect Manager for upgrade:
“This release includes an update to the Magento Connect Manager and as such will overwrite index.php and .htaccess files.
If you are using the Magento Connect Manager to upgrade your installation please back up your index.php and .htaccess files under your Magento root folder before upgrading and restore them after you are done.”

Please remember Magento Team doesn’t recommend upgrading a production installation of Magento directly. They ask everyone to backup database and all files before upgrading to Magento Version 1.2.1.2.

A diff file for the latest release is available on this page.

Vote for Free Magento Templates

Cube Websites Team is creating a free Magento Template. Basically they’ve created the first design for Magento application in October, 2008 and updated it back in January, 2009.

Currently they offer 2 versions of Free Magento Template called Amplitude. However these are not ready made templates but only designs that should be coded, tested and documented. Once Magento community votes for one design or another Cube Websites will continue their work and turn one of two designs into a functional Magento Template.

Please see both Magento designs and decide which of them looks better.
